Adhesive capsulitis, or frozen shoulder, is a medical condition that can cause stiffness and pain within the shoulder joint, states Mayo Clinic. This condition typically occurs gradually and can worsen without proper treatment.

A patient who has just undergone a procedure that immobilizes his shoulder or arm may be at risk for developing adhesive capsulitis, according to Mayo Clinic. Treatment for the condition includes physical therapy that focuses on range-of-motion activities to maintain and recover mobility. If the condition is severe, a doctor may inject numbing medications or corticosteroids into the shoulder joint to loosen the joint and reduce pain.
