Journals are used when a more recent source is needed for information, and they are subject to extensive peer review processes that can slow them down to the point that some of the information found in them is outdated by the time they are actually published.
An academic journal is filled with academic research and thoughts, sometimes containing great insights into the person who wrote it or his views. In their raw form, they risk being too biased to be reliable sources, and they may possibly contain inaccurate information on a subject. Peer review processes filter out journals that cannot be used as sources for articles or other papers and publishes those that are suitable to release to the public.
