What are airport metal detectors?

An airport metal detector is an electronic device used to detect metals. Some variations of metal detectors used in airports include multi-zone walk-through metal detectors, shoe analyzers and handheld detectors.
Airport metal detectors have been adopted by the United States in 1972 as a response to aircraft hijackings. The majority of metal detectors in airports work based on a pulse induction that sends bursts of current and generates a magnetic field. If a metal object is within the field, the system automatically detects it and sounds an alarm. Metal detectors can also be used in the industrial industry to screen food for metal contaminants.
