What is alabaster skin?

Alabaster skin is very pale with a translucent quality to it. It is named after the mineral alabaster, a type of gypsum that is translucent when cut in thin sheets. Alabaster has been used through the centuries in windows, perfume bottles and statuary.
The Daily Mail quotes makeup artists and fashion magazine editors as claiming that alabaster skin is finally back in vogue, as of 2011, after many decades when a healthy tan was considered to be a more attractive and desirable look. The Daily Mail listed Michelle Williams, Nicole Kidman, Anne Hathaway and Scarlett Johansson as celebrities notable for their alabaster skin.
