According to Allina Health, a person should not drink alcohol for at least 24 hours after having general anesthesia. In addition, if the patient is still on prescription pain medicine after that period, no alcohol should be consumed.
The Mayo Clinic explains that general anesthesia is very safe for most healthy individuals. Patients often experience mild side effects when they wake up, including nausea, dry mouth, fatigue, shivering and hoarseness.
Allina notes that judgement, coordination and reaction time are impaired for 12 to 24 hours after general anesthesia. Therefore, all patients should have adult supervision. Patients should refrain from driving or dealing with important issues during this time.
