What is aloe ferox?

Aloe ferox is a type of aloe plant found in South Africa. It has dull green leaves that form a petticoat on the stem as they dry. Five to eight branches rise from the center with spiked, yellowish-red flowers on the ends.

The aloe ferox is more commonly known as bitter aloe. It has long been harvested for its laxative properties, and it is also effective when used on arthritis and wounds; it is often used in cosmetics. Aloe ferox is popular with wildlife because its flowers attract many bird species and insects, and monkeys and baboons commonly raid the aloe for nectar.
