What is aluminum nitrite?

Aluminum nitrate is a salt compound composed of aluminum and nitric acid. This odorless salt is usually white in color and has a solid crystalline structure.

Since aluminum nitrate is a strong oxidizing agent, this compound is commonly used in antiperspirants, petroleum refining, tanning leather and the extraction of uranium. Aluminum nitrate is often used as a mordant for dyeing cotton. This salt is soluble in water, methanol, ethanol and ethylene glycol. Aluminum nitrate is not easily made. It is prepared by adding nitric acid to aluminum tricholride or by adding a lead nitrate solution to an aluminum sulfate solution.
