What do I do if I am sick and have lost my voice?

Individuals who have lost their voice, a condition known as laryngitis, should try to talk as little as possible, run a humidifier in their home, drink plenty of fluids and avoid clearing the throat, as stated by WebMD. Most cases of laryngitis clear up within two weeks; if an individual's voice does not come back in that time, he or she needs to see a doctor.
The common cold, the flu, acid reflux, excessive voice usage and throat irritation can all contribute to laryngitis. Pollution, smoke and allergies are also capable of causing voice loss.
If an underlying illness is contributing to the voice loss, managing the symptoms of the illness can help the voice return.
