The American Dental Association was originally formed in 1859 by a group of dentists in Niagara Falls, New York. Founding members of the American Dental Association aspired to create a high level of standards for dentistry.
A year after it was formed, the American Dental Association created its bylaws and constitution. They intended on an annual meeting, but it was canceled the first year in 1861 due to the Civil War. A code of ethics was created in 1866, and its policies were revised in 1899. In 1908, the first dental education pamphlet was published and handed out to patients. It included tips on flossing, brushing and dental check-ups.
