Eppie Lederer, whose maiden name was Esther Pauline Friedman, answered questions using the pen name Ann Landers until her death in 2002, and no one took over the name after her death. Prior to taking the pen name in 1955, another columnist, Ruth Crowley, used it.
By the time Eppie Lederer died, over 1,200 newspapers carried her "Ann Landers" column. She owned the rights to the Ann Landers name and decreed before her death that there would be no successor to the name.
Eppie had a twin sister named Pauline Esther who wrote the advice column "Dear Abby" under the pen name Abigail Van Buren.
