How do you apply Mehndi?

Mehndi is henna paste applied to the skin in the form of traditional designs. You'll need tissue paper, sugar, lemon juice, a pre-filled henna cone and some cotton balls or swabs to apply your own in as little as 20 minutes. Drying time is 1 to 3 hours.
- Prepare your skin for the henna application
Purchase a pre-filled henna cone or kit. Test the henna paste before you use it by dabbing a small amount on your skin to see if it causes irritation. Wash and dry your hands.
- Practice your design before putting it on your skin
Practice by writing with the tip of the cone on a smooth flat surface. When you are ready, work your design from the outside in. Break up a large design into smaller pieces. Apply repetitive elements consecutively. Keep a tissue and some cotton swabs handy to remove mistakes before they set.
- Allow the henna to dry completely for best results
Apply a mix of sugar and lemon juice with a cotton ball a few minutes before you remove the henna to darken the stain and enhance its staying power. Let it dry and wash it off with water. The Mehndi lasts anywhere from 2 to 3 weeks depending on its location.
