Charles Krauthammer became paralyzed when he suffered a diving board accident when he was a 22-year-old medical student at Harvard. He hit his head at the bottom of a swimming pool and injured himself along his cervical vertebrae, severing his spinal cord and paralyzing himself instantly.
He stayed in the hospital for 14 months after the incident and has used a wheelchair ever since. Krauthammer recalled several details of the accident in a 2013 interview with Fox News, such as his realization that he'd been paralyzed while he lay immobile at the bottom of the pool.
Despite his lengthy hospitalization, Krauthammer finished his medical degree at Harvard in 1975.
