What is the average healing time for a fractured thumb?
By Forinfos - 07/05/2026 - 0 comments
A fractured thumb is immobilized by a cast for about four to six weeks on average as it heals. However, it can take three months or more to regain full use of the affected hand, depending on the severity of the fracture, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
Physical therapy is sometimes recommended in order to restore thumb movement once the cast is removed. Soaking the hand in warm water and making circular motions with the thumb once the cast is removed can also help restore motion, according to the AAOS. Regular use of a spring-type hand squeezer helps restore thumb strength during recovery.
