The average middle-class income varies from state to state. The Pew Charitable Trust considers middle-class income to be between 67 percent and 200 percent of that state's median income. In 2015, the minimum middle-class income is lowest in Mississippi, at $25,309, and highest in Maryland, at $48,322. Since 2000, the percentage of middle-class households is shrinking in all 50 states as incomes fall, according to the New York Times.
