Towing costs vary widely from state to state and between towing companies, but the average for a simple tow of less than 30 miles is $50 to $140, as of 2015. The retail service chain Pepboys offers towing up to 20 miles for $49.99 throughout the United States.
Tow companies usually charge hook-up fees plus a particular dollar amount per mile. Hook-up fees start at around $40, while per-mile charges range from $2 to $5.
Some states regulate the maximum charge for towing. For example, in Connecticut the maximum charge for towing a vehicle with a gross weight of 10,000 pounds or less is $88 plus $4.75 per mile for tows of more than two miles.
