Avoid Windows Update failures by turning off the automatic installation option and researching the updates before installing them. In addition, do not unplug or turn off the computer while Windows configures the updates.

  1. Open the Control Panel

In Windows 7, click the Start button, and click Control Panel in the Start menu. In Windows 8, move your cursor to the top right of the screen to view the Charms bar. Alternatively, swipe in from the right side of a touch-screen computer. Click or press the Search icon, and type "Control Panel" without quotes. Click Control Panel.

  2. Locate Windows Update

Click System and Security in the Control Panel window. Next, click Windows Update. Windows Update may scan the Internet for new updates for installation. Stop the scan to prevent automatic download and installation.

  3. Configure the settings

In the Windows Update window, choose one of these two options: "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them" or "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them." Do not turn off Automatic Updates, as it can lead to system security issues. When Windows prompts you with new updates, research them to see if they cause issues before installing them.
