When Babe Ruth hit 29 home runs to lead the American League in 1919, it was not unusual for the league leader to hit just 11 or 12. In 1917, Wally Pipp had led the league with nine. It was a different era, and home runs were not a big part of the game. Babe Ruth changed all of that. Over the next 12 years, Ruth led the league 11 times, hitting 40 or more home runs 11 times. Most of his records have since been surpassed, but Babe Ruth is sure to always be remembered as the man who made the home run popular.
