Terrestrial baby salamanders eat small insects such as aphids and hatchling mini-waxworms. Aquatic baby salamanders eat small aquatic creatures such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia and tubifex worms.
Salamanders reproduce by laying eggs in moist locations. Some types of baby salamanders are fully developed but very small when they first hatch, only around 20 millimeters in length. Other types of baby salamanders are fully aquatic when they first hatch, similar to a frog's tadpole. As they mature, they grow legs and move onto land. Adult salamanders eat insects, worms, spiders and slugs. Larger salamanders may eat smaller salamanders. At all stages of the life cycle, salamanders are carnivores.
