Barium chloride dihydrate is the hydrated crystalline form of barium chloride, the barium salt of hydrochloric acid. Its chemical formula is BaCl2H4O2, and its molar mass is 244.26 grams per mole. Its density is 3.0979 grams per cubic centimeter, and its melting point is 960 degrees Celsius.
Barium chloride is produced from the reaction of hydrochloric acid with barium hydroxide or barium carbonate. It is a toxic substance when ingested, and it causes a reddening of the skin and eyes when coming in contact with them. It is not combustible; however, it gives off toxic fumes in contact with fire. It is used in the manufacturing of pigments, fireworks and steel.
