What is a base ten model?

A base 10 model, or base 10 block, is an educational tool used to help younger students grasp the concept behind the base 10 numbering system. Base 10 blocks have single cubes to represent one, cube strips to represent 10 and blocks to represent 100.
The base 10 numbering system is a way to teach kids that each number is 10 times the value of the number to its right. This is where the term base 10 comes from. In the number 574, for example, the 4 is in the ones place, the 7 is in the tens place and the 5 is in the hundreds place.
