The basilar membrane is lined with tiny hair cells used to convert vibrations to chemical signals, according to Auditory Neuroscience. The basilar membrane is located within a part of the inner ear known as the 'cochlear,' with various parts of the membrane sensitive to different noise frequencies.

Three rows of hair cells on the outer surface of the basilar membrane amplify sound vibrations for transmission to a single row of hair cells on the inside of the membrane. The inner hair cells then convey chemical messages to the connected auditory nerve, which communicates directly with the brain to enable hearing.
