The Battle of Cold Harbor was fought at Old Cold Harbor, located in central Virginia, which is approximately 10 miles northeast from the Civil War-era Confederate capital city of Richmond. The battle was fought between a Union force of 108,000 men and a Confederate force of 62,000 men.
The Battle of Cold harbor lasted nearly two weeks between May 31 and June 12 in 1864 and was part of General Ulysses S. Grant's overland campaign. The battle resulted in a defensive victory for the Confederate forces led by Robert E. Lee, as the Union soldiers were unable to break through until the last days of the war. During the battle, casualties on both sides totaled approximately 18,000 people.
