Ivory is mainly used for decorative objects and fine art pieces. It is also used for jewelry and other fine accessories.
Fine art pieces and decorative items made from ivory date back 20,000 years. Ivory is mainly harvested from the tusks of elephants, though it is found in the teeth of some animals. The rarest form of ivory comes from the teeth of whales. Since harvesting ivory often leads to the poaching of elephants, steps have been taken to protect elephants due to a decline in the numbers. Since 1989, the African elephant has been considered an endangered animal. Ivory trades have also been banned in some countries including Africa.
