What are the names of green gems?

The most well-known varieties of green gemstones are emerald and jade, both of which have high values for translucence and vivid, rich colors. A more uncommon green gem is the green diamond. Alexandrite is an interesting green gem that can also shine pink, yellow or red depending upon environmental lighting.

Opals, tourmalines, sapphires, pearls and garnets all have green varietals. Peridot, the modern birthstone for August, only comes in green, but its greens range from olive- through brownish- to yellow-green. Hiddenite, local to North Carolina, gets its green hue from an infusion of chromium. More opaque green gems include amber, amazonite, chrysoprase and agate.
