What are puttees?

A puttee is a type of legging that is made from irregularly-shaped strips of leather or cloth. It is wrapped on the lower leg in a spiral fashion. In lieu of spiral wrapping, it can also be attached by straps or laces.
The term "puttee" has an Indian origin. It comes from the Hindu word "patti," which means strip of cloth, or bandage. The garment was worn in ancient Greece by men of lower-class status. The puttee legging has also been worn by British soldiers and American infantrymen during World War I and by the Anglo-Indian army in various periods of world history.
