A shift dress is a dress that does not have complicated designs, normally ends at the knees and is usually sleeveless and less fitted at the waist and hips. Most shift dresses tend to be plain with a few featuring A-line skirts.
These dresses became popular between 1950 and 1960. Actresses such as Mia Farrow and Audrey Hepburn used to wear them and helped make them popular. Shift dresses often stay in vogue because they are said to be able to flatter just about any body shape. The dresses can be made of a variety of materials including polyester, cotton and nylon.
