The most effective way to stop itching from a tanning bed is to apply hot water to the skin, dry it with a soft towel and treat the skin with a medicated anti-itch lotion or peppermint oil. This procedure takes about 15 minutes and requires a shower or bath, a washcloth, fragrance-free liquid castile soap, a soft towel and anti-itch lotion or peppermint oil.
- Take a hot shower or bath
Take a shower or bath in the hottest water your skin tolerates. If you wish to cleanse your skin, use a small amount of fragrance-free liquid castile soap and a soft washcloth. Press the cloth to your skin, but do not scrub yourself. Stay in the hot water for 10 minutes.
- Dry your skin
Pat a soft, dry towel over your skin. Do not rub or scratch yourself, even if your skin still itches.
- Apply an itch-fighting product
Apply a liberal amount of an anti-itch product such as peppermint oil or a medicated lotion. Avoid products that contain aloe vera. Rub the product into your skin until it is completely absorbed, and blot the excess with the towel.
- Reapply the anti-itch product
Apply additional anti-itch product whenever the itching sensation returns. Do not exceed the daily application limit indicated on the product's packaging.
