How do you become an infusion therapy nurse?

To become an infusion therapy nurse, select an appropriate nursing program and complete it, pass your registered nurse exam for RN certification, and gain at least 1,600 hours of work experience in the field. Finally, study for and pass the Certified Registered Nurse Infusion exam.

1. Choose a nursing program

   Research local nursing programs. Choose between a two-year associate's degree in nursing and a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Both offer hands-on experience in addition to the required academic study.

2. Earn your degree or diploma in nursing

   Complete your chosen nursing program.

3. Study for the National Council Licensure Examination

   Study the focus areas of the National Council Licensure Examination, which include psychosocial integrity, safe and effective care environment, health promotion and maintenance, and physiological integrity.

4. Pass the exam

   Become a registered nurse by passing the National Council Licensure Examination.

5. Get a nursing job

   Gain employment as a registered general staff nurse in a hospital. Maintain a good work record.

6. Continue with your clinical experience

   Seek out and accept opportunities for further clinical experience. Work for a minimum of 1,600 hours as a registered nurse, focusing on an infusion-related field.

7. Study for the Certified Registered Nurse Infusion exam

   Study the topics on the exam, including pharmacology, fluid and electrolyte therapy, transfusion therapy and infection prevention.

8. Pass the CRNI exam

   Sit for the CRNI exam, which consists of 170 questions over 3 hours.
