How do you become a Navy nurse?

To become a Navy nurse, first check to see if you meet the Navy's active-duty service requirements. Then, visit a Navy office, and join the program that best fits your current educational and professional needs.

1. Ensure that you meet the requirements

   Verify that you meet the Navy's requirements for active-duty nurses. Visit your past, current or future university's nursing program website, and verify it is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. You must be a U.S. citizen between the ages of 18 and 41 and able to meet the standards of the NROTC applicant fitness assessment, which measures physical fitness.

2. Speak with a Navy recruiter

   Call or visit a Navy recruiting center, and let a representative know that you are interested in becoming a Navy nurse. Tell the recruiter about your educational background. If you are a licensed nurse, bring a copy of your license. Ask about your options for educational reimbursement.

3. Join a Navy program

   Join either the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps if you are a high school student, or the Navy's nurse candidate program if you are a current student. For a high school student, the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps covers the cost of your nursing education. If you are a current nursing student, join the Navy's Nurse Candidate Program to receive financial assistance during school. If you are a practicing nurse, join the Navy as an active-duty nurse.
