Where is Benghazi?

Benghazi is a city in the North African country of Libya. It is a coastal city in the northeastern part of Libya in the Cyrenaica region on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.

In 2014, Benghazi became Libya's de facto legislative capital, although Libya's parliament did not meet there during the summer of 2014 because of security concerns. As of 2014, Benghazi is the second-largest city in Libya after Tripoli.

On Sept. 11, 2012, a U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi was attacked by gunmen from a group of Islamist militants. The attack killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens.
