BGP, an abbreviation for border gateway protocol, is a protocol that is used between multiple gateway hosts to exchange information. The hosts must be linked through a network of autonomous systems. As of 2014, this protocol is generally used by gateway hosts on the Internet.
The BGP features a routing table that lists the addresses of routers within the network. A cost metric is also created for the different paths to each router on the list, ensuring that the best route is chosen. Gateway hosts using BGP only sends updated information to the router table when a change has been detected.
