How big was megalodon?

The Megalodon was the biggest shark ever to prowl the world's oceans, with some estimates putting the size of the ancient predator at more than 50 feet long. Some scientists believe that the largest of this particular ancient shark could have been longer than 60 feet.

The problem with pinpointing the size of the Megalodon is that, while scientists have found a number of teeth, actual bones from the body of this massive cousin to the modern great white shark have been more difficult to find. There was a time when estimates had the giant predator reaching 100 feet long, but most palaeontologists agree 55 to 60 feet is likely more accurate.
