Bipolar type 1 disorder is a mood disorder characterized by the presence of at least one manic state, usually mixed with episodes of depression, explains the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Bipolar I is distinct from bipolar II as bipolar II only involves hypomanic states, not full mania.
Symptoms of a manic episode involve more than a happy feeling. The Mayo Clinic lists symptoms of mania as including decreased need for sleep, increase in risky behaviors, racing thoughts and irritability. While at least one manic episode must have occurred for a diagnosis of bipolar I, the majority of those affected by bipolar I also experience depressive episodes. A depressive mood state is characterized by hopelessness, insomnia or hypersomnia, fatigue, and problems eating, among other symptoms, explains the Mayo Clinic.
