Geese are among the most easily identified birds that migrate south for the winter, and they can be identified by their v-shaped flight pattern. The majority of the 650 species of birds found in North America are migratory.
Other types of birds that migrate include blackbirds, cardinals, ducks, gulls, hawks and flamingos. Not all birds migrate in the same way. In fact, there are three different types of migration. Short-distance migratory birds may only travel from higher to lower elevations without traveling a great distance. Medium-distance migration may only cover the distance one state, while long-distance migration can span entire continents.
