What birthstones are most commonly purchased?

Although some months have alternative birthstones, the most commonly purchased birth stones are the 12 traditional stones: garnet, amethyst, aquamarine, diamond, emerald, pearl, ruby, peridot, sapphire, tourmaline, topaz and tanzanite. June, October, November and December have alternative birthstones that are not as popular as the primary ones.

The alternative birthstone for June babies is alexandrite, which is not nearly as popular as the pearl that has been traditionally used for decorations and jewelry. The October alternative is opal, which is not as popular as tourmaline, and citrine is not as popular as topaz for November babies. December has three gems, but zircon and turquoise are not as popular as tanzanite.
