Bisqueware is clay pottery that has been through its first firing. Bisque cannot have water added to it and is at the preparatory stage before glazing and final processing.
Bisqueware was most recognizable in the form of porcelain used to make dolls during the 19th century. Bisque is a term used to describe molded clay that has been placed in a kiln once for firing but is not glazed or finished. Bisque is clay that cannot have water added to it so as to reform it into something else. It is, however, not in a finished state. To create usable bowls or other objects, bisqueware is glazed and fired again.
