The Black Death, or Black Plague, first occurred in Europe between 1347 and 1351. Subsequent and more localized outbreaks occurred in Italy between 1629 and 1631, London between 1665 and 1666, Vienna in 1679, Marseille between 1720 and 1722 and Moscow in 1771.
The initial pandemic was the most widespread and wiped out at least one-third of the population of Europe, and possibly as much as two-thirds.
It was not until the early 19th century that Europe was completely rid of the Black Death, although some other parts of the world, such as Asia, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas, continued to suffer from it.
