Though it is not well understood by those with working vision, blindness does not prevent a person from living a self-sustained life, including their own hygiene. Only for those who are not vision impaired, thorough cleansing of the hindquarters is validated by visually checking used toilet tissue for soil.

The blind must use a more tactile technique of either testing their body through touch for the presence of moisture or employing the use of a moist sanitary towelette. In either regard, it is necessary to wash their hands before exiting the restroom in order to minimize the potential for contamination.
