The bloodiest battle of the U.S. Civil War was fought at Gettysburg, Pa., July 1 to 3, 1863. By the end of the engagement, Union and Confederate forces had suffered combined losses of 51,000 dead and wounded.

While the battle of Gettysburg was the most costly engagement of the entire war, the bloodiest single-day engagement took place a year earlier at Antietam, in Sharpsburg, Md. Unlike the Battle of Gettysburg, which created thousands of casualties over a three-day period, the Battle of Antietam cost a combined 21,000 dead and wounded in just a single day of fighting between the Army of the Potomac and the Army of Northern Virginia.
