Blue Bell Creameries, the maker of Blue Bell ice cream, opened in 1907 in Brenham, Texas. The original name for the company was Brenham Creamery Company. The company changed its name in 1930 in honor of the Texas bluebell wildflower, which grows native in the state.
Only 30 percent of the supermarkets in the country stock Blue Bell ice cream. In April 2015, the company recalled all its products due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The company found the bacteria in its ice cream in March 2015. The Centers for Disease Control linked the bacteria in Blue Bell ice cream to cases of listeriosis from 2010.
