What is the Blue Ridge Parkway viaduct?

The Linn Cove Viaduct, which is a segmental concrete bridge that spans 1,243 feet, is the final portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway. It winds and turns along the side of Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina. The viaduct, completed in 1987, sits at mile marker 304.

Visitors to the viaduct can drive on it or take a hike under or above it along the Tanawha Trail. Designed by Figg and Muller Engineers, the viaduct saved Grandfather Mountain from extensive damage caused by traditional cut-and-fill roadwork. Engineers covered portions of the mountain's face during construction to prevent accidental staining from epoxies, concrete and grout.
