Dating back to 1976, the BNP Paribas Open was originally held in Tucson, Arizona and Palm Springs, California before being relocated to its current home at Indian Wells, California in 1981. Over 10 million in prize money was allocated to the competitors in 2015.
In 2009, BNP Paribas became the leading sponsor of the tournament and the CEO of BNP Paribas, Larry Ellison bought the Indian Wells tournament facility. The 2015 BNP Paribas Open was held from March 9 to 22 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, California. The ATP tournament was won by Novak Djokovic, while the WTA tournament was won by Simona Halep, with a combined attendance of 400,000 fans.
