Not all boats need to have an identification number. Boats that were constructed or imported before Nov. 1,1972 do not need to possess a hull identification number.
Boats that are shorter than 9.5 feet also do not need an identification number. Homemade boats that are not motorized are not required to have a hull identification number. In some states, owners of older or homemade vessels need a verification of vessel identification number.
The hull identification number is a unique 12 to 14 digit number that identifies a boat. The number is usually found on the right starboard within 2 inches of the transom.
