What is a bone lesion?

A bone lesion is an abnormality or growth that can result in destruction or deterioration of bones, primarily the spine, rib cage or pelvis, according to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. Bone lesions can extend from marrow of the inner bone to the outside bone surface.
To test the bone lesion, physicians or surgeons often perform a bone lesion biopsy and remove a portion of the bone or bone marrow to analyze, according to the U.S. National Institute of Health. A small drill is inserted into and twisted into the bone to pull a sample and is later sent to a lab for testing.
