"The Hot Zone" is a nonfiction book written by Richard Preston and published in 1995 by Anchor that became a New York Times best seller. The book chronicles the discovery, cases and efforts to maintain the Ebola virus in Virginia.

The book is divided into four sections: The Shadow of Mount Elgon, The Monkey House, Smashdown and Kitum Cave. In the first section, Preston introduces the readers to the history of the different viruses, as well as the outbreak of the Ebola virus disease, or EVD. The Monkey House and Smashdown narrate about the Reston virus, and the last section, Kitum Cave, relates the author visiting the cave where the suspected Ebola virus' host animal lives.
