Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a combat sport and martial art that teaches a smaller individual how to defend himself against a larger individual using proper technique and leverage. It was created by the Gracie family who modified judo and traditional Japanese jujutsu to create the new martial art.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu contains both stand-up maneuvers and the ground-fighting techniques it is famous for. The key to Brazilian jiu-jitsu is gaining superior positioning in order to apply its numerous holds, locks, chokes and joint manipulations on one's opponent. The first Brazilian jiu-jitsu school opened in Brazil in 1925. It has been popular in the United States since the 1980s.
