Bromine monochloride, often referred to as simply bromine chloride, is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula BrCl. It is used as a disinfectant in industrial settings.
Physical properties of bromine chloride include a reddish-yellow color and an irritating odor. It is soluble in water. It reacts with water and steam to form hydrochloric acid. Bromine chloride is a strong oxidizing agent and reacts with combustible material to generate heat necessary for combustion. It decomposes above temperatures of 50 degrees Fahrenheit to form chlorine gas. The liquid is toxic and it is an irritant to the skin, eyes and mucous membranes.
