A buccal swab test is a method of collecting DNA samples. According to the Laboratory Corporation of America, DNA samples are collected by rubbing the inside of the mouth with cotton-tipped swab. Unlike obtaining DNA from blood, buccal swab tests are non-invasive.
During a buccal swab test, cheek or epithelial cells containing DNA adhere to the cotton swab according to the Laboratory Corporation of America. After the test is performed, the samples are then sent out to laboratories to be analyzed.
According to the DNA Diagnostics Center, a buccal swab produces the same results as a blood sample. Buccal swabs tests are painless, so they are the preferred method of obtaining DNA samples.
