Build an overhead shelf in your garage to create more floor space. Start by gathering your materials: brackets, carpenter's level, carpenter's square, circular saw, 4 x 8 plywood, 4 x 6 and 2 x 4 lumber, measuring tape, metal studs, paint or stain, 1-inch wood screws, a power drill, ratchets, screwdriver and wrenches.
- Determine the support measures
Measure the height of the ceiling and the height of the vehicle to determine the length of the shelf's side supports, and then determine the width of the shelf's bottom supports
- Build the shelf frame
Build a 2 x 4 frame for the side of the shelf, and screw it into the ceiling rafters. Next, build the second frame for the bottom support. Bolt the lower frame together with corner brackets.
- Add the brackets
Cut the horizontal braces to fit inside the lower frame; these braces are used to hold the shelf. Use the 2 x 4 lumber to cut out the side brackets. Use a brace at either end of the shelf and the middle braces every 2 feet in between.
- Paint or stain the shelf
Paint or stain all pieces of the shelf for a finished look.
- Install the shelf
Connect the side braces to the frames with upright brackets, and then place the shelf into the lower frame. Secure it with wood screws.
