The steps to building storage space under stairs involves locating the studs, cutting out the drywall, constructing the storage boxes and installing them. It is a job that can be done with a moderate level of ability and standard tools. These include a drill, drywall saw, wood saw, screwdriver and hammer.
The steps to building storage space under stairs by recessing storage boxes into a wall are as follows:
- Locate the studs
- Cut and measure
- Build the boxes
- Fit the storage boxes
- Add trim
Locate the studs behind the drywall as the storage boxes will be fitted to them later in the process. Mark out the studs on the wall with a pencil, then decide where the storage boxes are to be located. They can get taller as the stairs rise.
Use the drywall saw to cut the holes in the wall, then measure them.
Build the boxes according to the measurements. Use plywood fitted together with nails. This should include a backboard and shelving. Drill two or three extra holes in each side in order to have adjustable shelving, and then paint the boxes.
Attach the storage boxes to the studs in the wall using screws.
Use a hammer and nails to add trim in order to smooth out the edge between the wall and the new storage box.
